Warwickshire Online Parish Clerks

Important: please read the explanation of the scheme before contacting an Online Parish Clerk (OPC)

(if you have previously read this explanation, jump to the list of parishes but please remember that new information is being added to this explanation, as well as to the table)

If you are looking for research help click on the initial letter of the parish in which you are interested in the main table on this page (alternatively use your browser's search/find facility). The table is arranged strictly alphabetically. Little Packington is found among the Ls, not the Ps, and Bishops Itchington is amongst the Bs, etc. The only exception to this is Great and Little Wolford (which is one parish), which is among the Ws, as it it usually known as 'the Wolfords'.

What's new (13 September 2008)?:

New layout of pages and links: links to Memorial Inscription lists of surnames now go to the master index on Pickard's Pink pages (as Birth, Marriage and Death links have always done). The advantage of this is that if the file name has to be changed to accommodate new lists, the link is not broken. There are several new surname lists.

The list of locations 'Places that you cannot find in the list' has been merged with the main list.

Additional information and links for Birmingham parishes that were historically part of Worcestershire have been added

Many new transcriptions of Baptisms, Marriages, Banns and Burials (see the parish for details, or link to the BMD index

New Online Parish Clerks for Warwick St Mary and Warwick St Nicholas, Tredington

Many broken links have been removed: these include, sadly, many transcriptions of names on War Memorials. If anyone has lists of names from War Memorials now missing from the pages, please let me know

Volunteering as an OPC

The first Online Parish Clerk scheme was organised by a group researching family history in Cornwall, and most subsequent schemes have followed the lead of Cornwall in the way they are organised. I acknowledge that I have drawn to a considerable extent on the Cornwall OPC web page in preparing this web page for Warwickshire. Online Parish Clerks should not be confused with the official Parish Clerk appointed by the Parish Council.

Online-Parish-Clerks (OPCs) are volunteers who collect and transcribe records for a chosen specific parish. The data may include census, parish registers, cemetery records, parish histories and other records. It takes time to transcribe and accumulate material, so that an OPC may not yet have full data for all sources. Each OPC decides what data to collect, how it will be organized and distributed or displayed, and considers possible copyright, data protection and privacy issues, and avoids misuse of data. Data provided by OPCs must not be used for commercial purposes without the permission of the OPC.

The Warwickshire Online Parish Clerk volunteers provide information to researchers at no charge. All information is provided to researchers on the understanding that transcripts are, at best, a secondary source and only a guide. As errors may occur in transcription, original documents should always be checked. Some OPCs may be prepared to do Census lookups, but as the Censuses are now all available online, either as transcriptions or images, it should not be necessary to request Census lookups, but OPCs may be prepared to help with the interpretation of difficult images.

OPCs welcome donations of parish and family information or data. If you have information or data that you are willing to share, please contact the relevant OPC.

The Warwickshire scheme started in January 2006, with about 10% of the parishes covered by an OPC. In October 2007 88 parishes now have an OPC (in October 2007).

Volunteering as an OPC If you are interested in becoming an OPC, or have further questions, please contact the coordinator, .

It is hoped that OPCs will be able to acknowledge an enquiry soon after receiving it, but you should remember that an OPC may be busy, or may be away on holiday. You may find that the OPC is unable to help you because he or she does not have access to the information you require. If you have not had any response at all from an OPC by four weeks, please let the coordinator know.

The links to 'Tracing your Ancestors' in the table are to the pages maintained by the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry (BMSGH). You should note that if the name of a parish consists of two words, such as Monks Kirby or Little Compton, the parish will sometimes be found in the BMSGH list under the first word, and sometimes under the second word. The links are to the parish pages: you will need to look at the index pages on Tracing your Ancestors in Birmingham and Tracing your Ancestors in Warwickshire for the index of parishes.

Parish Registers (or parts of Parish Registers) that are missing from the International Genealogical Index Substantial parts of Parish Registers are not covered by the International Genealogical Index. Those parts that are missing, and some alternative sources of information, are shown in this web page.

IGI Batch numbers You may find that the coverage in the International Genealogical Index may be more extensive than is suggested in the BMSGH pages (see Hugh Wallis' IGI batch numbers for a more up-to-date list).

War Memorials Names on War Memorials for many parishes in Warwickshire can be found in 'The County of Warwickshire Roll of Honour, 1914-2005: Vol 1 South Warwickshire' by Kenneth Fowler; copies at Alcester, Leamington, Rugby, Southam, Straftford and Warwick Libraries (see Warwickshire Libraries Online Catalogue for details)

The links to 'MI surnames' (Monumental Inscriptions) are to the indexes prepared by volunteers to the fiches sold by the BMSGH as a finding aid and to help discover if it is worth buying a copy of the fiche from the BMSGH.

Places you cannot find in the table: If you cannot find the place you are looking for in this list, it may not be a parish, or it may have an alternative name or spelling: try the locations page. See also a key to the origin of Warwickshire place names (from the work of the English Place Names Society).

Maps: If you click on the 'Map of location' link in the parish entry, this will bring up a map (200Kb) showing where the parish is in Warwickshire and the contiguous parishes (this map is used by kind permission of the staff of the Warwickshire County Record Office). The parishes shown on this map are the 1974 civil parishes, but usually this is the same as the ecclesiastical parish (for more detail see the map prepared by the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies or the Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers). In most browsers you can enlarge the map if neccessary by resting the mouse pointer within the image and clicking when the pointer turns into a plus sign (in Internet Explorer 6.1 a special increase/decrease icon appears). The map also shows the name (underlined) of the Poor Law Union and Registration District.

Please note that the list below contains (for the most part) only the historic parishes, that is those in existence before the division of parishes in the middle of the 19th century. Some parishes created a few years before 1837 are included. For information on other parishes created from the middle of the 19th century onwards, consult 'Tracing your ancestors in Warwickshire or Birmingham'.

Biggin 'Tracing your Ancestors in Warwickshire' says Clifton on Dunsmore; 'The Place Names of Warwickshire' says Stoke, although it mentions a Biggin Farm and Biggin Mills in Newton, part of Clifton on Dunsmore, and a Biggin Hall in Thurlaston, part of Dunchurch. There are numerous small places called Biggin throughout north Warwickshire, and no doubt elsewhere: in Old English (Bygging) it meant 'house' in the sense of manor house.
