4 December 1882 There is a note from the Wolverhampton police: MEMORANDUM - 4 Dec. 1882. The Chief Constable, Town Hall, WOLVERHAMPTON. The Superintendant, Boys Reformatory, Small Heath. Re: J W Benson - In reply to your inquiry of 1st inst., I have to inform you that nothing can be ascertained respecting his parents. His father was summoned in order to obtain and order to contribute. He then absconded and has not since been heard of. Yours truly, R D D Hay [rather scrawled]
